Static Caravan are a Leeds based band that combine melodic post-punk with soundscape design, and experimental production techniques. We play music a bit like The Modern Lovers, Fontaines D.C. or Sonic Youth, but our overall influences are far-reaching. Much of the band's ethos centres around developing a sporadic style of music that explores a broad range of genres. Our fan-base is largely made up of people that we've met through music-based University societies, and DIY gigs at Leeds venues such as Wharf Chambers, Mabgate Bleach and Chunk.
A major milestone for us was reached in January 2022 when we organised and co-headlined a gig at Wharf Chambers with a turnout of nearly 100 people. Our first show outside of “open mic” performances, the gig was a huge success that saw us receive an overwhelmingly positive response to music that we'd been developing for nearly 3 years. A review by Basement Leeds gives an overview of the audience response, with a nod to the experimental nature of our sound.
Another success for the band has been the release of the EP 'Fifa Demos' (so called because we sold them at our gigs inside PS2 Fifa 07 cases) where the “live session” feel of our recorded practices is juxtaposed with electronic manipulation on tracks such as Caricatures and Four Brick Walls.
Whilst the rest of us cut our teeth playing in indie rock bands, our keyboard player Mia Windsor is a budding contemporary composer, and our drummer Tom Carroll performs with instruments he's made out of old clockwork toys and contact mics. Jack O'Connor however has recently graduated from the University of Leeds with a BA in post-punk.
